Short answer
To sell online courses without platform transaction fees, pick a platform that doesn't take a percentage of each sale. learnfrom.co charges no transaction fees, so you keep 100% of your course revenue apart from standard Stripe or PayPal processing fees. It charges only a flat per-student fee instead. Several other platforms take 2% to 10% of every sale.
Two different kinds of fees
- Payment processing fees: charged by Stripe, PayPal or another processor on every platform. These can't be avoided.
- Platform transaction fees: a percentage the course platform takes on top, usually on lower-priced plans. These can be avoided.
Platforms that charge a transaction fee
| Platform | Platform transaction fee | Fee on 100 sales of a $200 course |
|---|---|---|
| Skool | 10% | $2,000 |
| Teachable (Starter plan) | 7.5% | $1,500 |
| Payhip (free plan) | 5% | $1,000 |
| Kajabi (third-party payments, Basic plan) | 2% | $400 |
| Mighty Networks | 2% | $400 |
| learnfrom.co | None (flat per-student fee instead) | $499 total at $4.99 per student |
The example assumes 100 sales of a $200 course, which is $20,000 in revenue, before payment processing fees. These platforms also charge monthly or plan fees, except Payhip's free plan. Podia also charges transaction fees on lower plans.
Why a flat per-student fee scales differently
A percentage fee grows with your course price. A flat per-student fee doesn't. learnfrom charges the same $4.99 whether the course costs $50 or $500, and the rate drops to $3.49 after 250 students and $1.99 after 1,000. A 5% fee is cheaper below a course price of about $100, and more expensive above it.
How to check any platform before you commit
- Look for a "transaction fee" line on the pricing page, and check which plan it applies to.
- Check whether the fee also applies when you use your own Stripe or PayPal account.
- Add the monthly price, any plan limits and the transaction fee together to get the real cost.
- Confirm the current figures. Platforms change pricing, so use this page as a starting point.
